Threatening skies and a chill north wind put somewhat of a damper on the Greater Palo Cedro Area Chamber of Commerce’s Kool April Nites Show N Shine on April 15, 2013.  But despite the dark, rain-laden clouds scudding over the parking lot at Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel, drivers began arriving in the early morning to get a good parking place and by the official start at 3:00 p.m. over 100 vintage cars and trucks graced the grounds and spilled out into the overflow parking lot in front.

Greater Palo Cedro Chamber board members (left to right) Frank Billy of Palo Cedro Office Supplies, Robert Hanson of Ambassador Limousine, Matt Webb of Premier Oil, Kim Burns of Tread Tech Tire Factory, Judy La Russa of East Valley Times, Laura Baldwin of Alliance Realty, and event organizer Joey Oretez of Palo Cedro Printing present Best of Show trophy to Phil Mitsueda and his 1964 Chevy Corvette.

As trophy sponsors scurried around picking their winners, drivers chatted and admired each other’s entries, comparing notes on restoration techniques as only insiders can.  As the dinner hour rolled around, many contestants and spectators alike dined on the pulled pork sandwiches (prepared by Dave Ortez of Takeables Pizza) and chili dogs and finished off their meals with cake and cookies from the bake sale table run by the Palo Cedro Park.

About 5:45 as the wind picked up and raindrops dotted the vehicles’ fancy paint jobs, a few car owners decided to break camp and head for shelter, and the event organizers began announcing the trophy winners, so the drivers could take their awards with them.  But even as they rushed to hand out the trophies, the little squall passed and the sun came out again.

In all, local businesses sponsored 30 beautiful trophies created for the occasion by K&M Trophies of Palo Cedro, whose owner Val McFarlane was the lucky winner of $193 for the 50/50 raffle.  In addition to donating all the car show trophies, local businesses made up beautiful baskets which were raffled off at the show.
